Cut lending rates for business, RBI tells banks

 | Updated: Feb 12, 2017, 08.57 AM IST
NEW DELHI: RBI governor Urjit Patel said on Saturday that banks should extend the benefit of lower interest rates beyond the retail sector, indicating that lenders should pare the cost of loans for companies.

Patel said banks had benefited from RBI's reduction in policy rates as well as the inflow of low-cost deposits in current and savings accounts in November and December. "The average lending rate reduction (by banks) has been less. We feel there is some scope for further reduction in lending rates and... for sectors like housing, personal etc, the reduction has been much more than for other sectors by the same bank," he said.

Urjit Patel spoke to reporters after the customary post-Budget address to the RBI board by finance minister Arun Jaitley.

RBI, as well as the government, have maintained that banks have pocketed the gains of the rate reduction and it was only after a prod by the Centre in late December that banks pared their benchmark rate by up to 90 basis points. But the reduction for home loans was lower and for other categories even lower.

Bankers said they are focusing more on the retail segment as they believe that lower rates could encourage demand, unlike the corporate sector which is besieged by a combination of excess production capacity and a high level of debt.

Asked about the change in RBI's stance from accommodative to neutral, which means that there is lower possibility of the central bank supporting a rate cut through its policy rates, Jaitley said: "All finance ministers have a perpetual desire (of lower rate) but, at the end of the day, we all respect the decision that RBI takes." Jaitley also said the legal and executive framework to deal with bad debt has been put in place by the government.

Four MPs & education minister now in O Panneerselvam's camp, ‘more to follow’

B Sivakumar| TNN | Updated: Feb 12, 2017, 10.09 AM IST

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam breached the inner fort of the V K Sasikala brigade on Saturday when school education minister K Pandiarajan, four Lok Sabha members — PR Sundaram, K Ashok Kumar, SP Sathyabhama and R Vanaroja — and MGR loyalists C Ponnaiyan and C Aranganayagam crossed over to his side.

With Rajya Sabha member V Maithreyan with him, OPS now enjoys the open support of five MPs and seven MLAs. Pandiarajan had gone with Sasikala to meet governor C Vidyasagar Rao on Thursday to stake claim to form the government.

The four Lok Sabha members said they took the decision after listening to their voters' sentiments. Pandiarajan tweeted before calling on OPS: "Will listen to the collective voice of my voters & decide in a way to uphold the dignity of Amma's memory & unity of AIADMK!"

After the meeting, he said: "More MLAs will join Annan (OPS) in the coming days. DMK is trying to split our party and I want to avoid that. The party led by OPS will not take the support of DMK in any manner."

Pandiarajan's support is a U-turn from his position on Thursday when he had accused Pannerselvam of being "an opportunist who fell at Sasikala's feet after she was elected the legislature party leader".

Ashok Kumar, Sundaram and Ponnaiyan blamed Sasikala for not allowing any party member to see Jayalalithaa when she was in hospital for more than 70 days.

Sundaram even accused Sasikala of conspiracy right from the night of Jaya's death. "On December 5, Amma's death was announced at midnight. All party leaders were sobbing, but Sasikala and her 15 family members went into a huddle. They were talking about who should take over as CM. I didn't see tears in her eyes," said Sundaram.

Ashok Kumar demanded a CBI probe into Jayalalithaa's death. "Leave all MLAs free and we will know who has their support," he said. OPS was all smiles as leaders and cadres flocked to his Greenways Road residence.

Now in the OPS camp, former MLA Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, who had crossed over from the DMK to the AIADMK before the 2016 assembly election, asked cadres to shun the habit of falling at anybody's feet. And OPS nodded in agreement.

Kailash Satyarthi's stolen Nobel replica recovered, 3 arrested

 | Updated: Feb 12, 2017, 10.24 AM IST
NEW DELHI: The high-profile case of theft at Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi's residence has been solved with the recovery of the replica of the Nobel Peace Prize and other stolen valuables.

Three persons have been arrested in connection with the theft, police said on Sunday.

It was earlier reported that police had identified the burglars involved in the crime and was working to nab them. District police and Crime Branch teams have been investigating the case.

Last week, a gang of thieves allegedly decamped with a replica of the Nobel Medal and the citation, along with some mementos and jewellery, from Satyarthi's Kalkajiresidence.

Satyarthi had said he was deeply pained by the "unfortunate incident" and added that the theft has strengthened his resolve to continue working for the cause of children.

The child rights activist won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. He shared the prize with Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai.

Satyarthi had presented his Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Pranab Mukherjee in January, 2015. The original medal has been preserved and is now on display at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum, his office said.
